A child or senior in a field of bluebonnets is about as Texan as a portrait gets. The season is short, though, and the best fields are often on roadsides and private land — so a little planning goes a long way.

When do bluebonnets bloom?

In southeast and central Texas, bluebonnets usually appear in mid-March and peak from late March into mid-April. Exact timing depends on fall and winter rain and temperatures, and fields can peak and fade within a couple of weeks. Keep your plans flexible and be ready to go when the fields look full.

Is it illegal to pick bluebonnets?

It's a popular myth that picking bluebonnets is against state law — there's no Texas law specifically banning it. But the practical rules still matter: don't trespass on private property, don't damage flowers on highway right-of-way, and leave the field in good shape so the plants can reseed for next year. Sit and kneel in areas that are already flattened instead of trampling fresh flowers.

Stay safe

  • Check the ground before sitting down. Fire ant mounds are common in fields, and snakes can hide in tall wildflowers.
  • Pull completely off the road and watch traffic — roadside fields can be close to fast-moving cars.
  • Bring water, sunscreen and bug spray, and wear closed-toe shoes to walk in.
  • Get permission before photographing on private land.

What to wear in the bluebonnets

Blue and green are already everywhere in the frame, so choose colors that complement rather than compete: white, cream, soft yellow, pale pink, coral and light denim all look beautiful. Avoid all-blue outfits that blend into the flowers, and skip busy patterns. Western boots and hats are always at home in a Texas field.

Timing your session

Late-afternoon light makes bluebonnets glow and keeps faces free of squinting. Weekday evenings are also less crowded than weekend afternoons at popular fields.

Bluebonnet sessions are popular for children, families and seniors. Spring dates go quickly — get in touch in February to plan yours.
